The Shift from GTE to GS

The Australian Government has officially replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement with the new Genuine Student (GS) requirement for all Student Visa (Subclass 500) applications. This is a massive shift designed to prioritize students who have a clear, logical progression in their academic and career paths.

What is the Genuine Student (GS) Requirement?

Instead of writing a 300-word GTE statement, applicants are now required to answer targeted questions within the visa application form. These questions focus on:

  • Details of your current circumstances (family, employment, economic situation in your home country).
  • Why you chose your specific course and education provider in Australia.
  • How the course will benefit your future career and earning potential.
  • Details of any previous study in Australia (if applicable).

Higher English Language Requirements

In addition to the GS requirement, the minimum English language scores have been increased. For a standard Bachelor or Master degree, you now generally need an IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent PTE score), up from 5.5.
